Fostering and Spaying Animals is Important by Mass Media student Trinity P

Why fostering and spaying/neutering is important

Many shelters are overwhelmed with cats and kittens, shelters are overcrowded b/c there are so many cats/kittens shelters are not able to take them all in. Especially in spring and summer b/c of kitten season there are many unwanted cats and kittens needing a home. Spay and neutering your cat is very important and can prevent many unwanted and less likely for things to happen. Female cats can produce many liters a year so it is important to spay and neuter your cat or kitten.

Shelters are getting overwhelmed

Shelters are getting overwhelmed especially when kitten season comes around, because in the spring and summer female cats reproduce more. When there are so many kittens being born especially outside ones it is hard for shelters to be able to take them all in and care for them. If shelters do get overwhelmed and overcrowded condition it can cause euthanasia.

Spay and neutering

Spay and neutering your cat is very important; it could prevent many unwanted things from happening like unwanted litters, a less chance of getting mammary gland tumors, ovarian or uterine cancer. Male cats also are less likely to spray and mark their territory, and the risk of testicular cancer is eliminated. It also gives a chance to outside cats to become a house cat.

Female cat pregnancy

Did you know that a female cat can have on average 4-8 kittens during pregnancy, a female cat can get pregnant many times a year. Also female cats can produce 11,000 kittens in less than 10 years. This is another reason why it is a good idea to spay and or neuter your cat. An unaltered female cat can become pregnant at 4 months of age so make sure to spay and neuter your cat if you want to prevent that from happening.

Kitten season

When it starts to get warmer outside cats begin giving birth to many litters of kittens. This is a time when shelters get overwhelmed with all the cats and kittens, fostering or adopting cats and kittens from shelters helps them out a lot. There are millions of kittens born during kitten season, and there are just not enough loving homes and  loving people to go to. This means many of them die from overcrowded shelters, on busy streets, highways etc. We can change this though the first step of preventing heart break of kitten season is through spay/neutering. It's the first thing we can do to prevent overpopulation and prevent the suffering  of thousands of animals.
